Google Rank Tracking Is Broken: What to Measure Instead

If your agency sent you a ranking report this month, there is a real chance some of those numbers are wrong. Google rank tracking tools, the software most SEO agencies use to tell clients where they show up, have been returning unreliable data for weeks, according to Search Engine Roundtable on October 12, 2026.

And it was not just the third-party tools. Google’s own Search Console performance report fell more than two days behind over the weekend before catching up on Monday.

For SEO people, this is a nerdy data story. For a law firm partner, a real estate agent or a contractor paying for marketing, it is a useful reminder: rankings were never the point. Calls, booked consultations and signed clients are the point. This post covers what happened, why it matters, and five things to do this week so a broken chart never fools you again.

The short answer: Google is blocking and, in some cases, feeding bad data to the automated tools that check search rankings, so third-party ranking reports have been unreliable since late September 2026. Do not panic over sudden drops. Judge your marketing by tracked calls, form leads and signed clients, and use rankings only as a rough trend.

What happened with Google rank tracking

Rank trackers work by sending automated searches to Google and recording where a website appears. Google has been making that harder all year. In a report published October 12, 2026, Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Roundtable wrote that many tools are still struggling to report Google rankings, with problems growing since late September.

The same report cites research from the rank tracking company Nozzle describing three tactics: wide blocking of the proxy networks scrapers use, more frequent captchas, and what Nozzle calls “poisoned” results. In that last case, the page looks normal but the results have been swapped, so a tracked site can appear to fall out of the top 10 when real searchers still see it. Nozzle found about 8 percent of the results pages it checked were affected.

Several vendors, including Sistrix, DataForSEO, SE Ranking, Advanced Web Ranking and Morningscore, posted notices or explanations. Schwartz believes Google is mainly targeting AI bots and the scraping service SerpApi rather than SEO tools specifically. Google did not comment in the article.

Then, over the weekend, Google’s own data lagged too. Search Engine Roundtable reported on October 11, 2026 that the Search Console performance report, which normally updates within hours, was more than 64 hours behind. It was back to normal by October 12, and Google had not publicly explained the delay.

Why it matters for your marketing

Most small business owners never log in to a rank tracker. They get a monthly PDF with green and red arrows. When those arrows are built on shaky data, two bad things can happen.

  • False alarms. A “poisoned” check shows you dropping off page one. You panic, rewrite pages that were working, or fire a vendor over a glitch.
  • False comfort. Rankings look stable while calls quietly slide. Nobody notices because the report only tracks positions.
  • Vanity reporting. Ranking number one for a phrase nobody searches, or one that never produces clients, has always been a weak win. Shaky data makes it weaker.

Even before this, Advanced Web Ranking explained in a September 18, 2026 post that tracked positions can differ from what real people see because of hyper local results and Google serving simpler pages to queries it treats as automated. Its advice: report ranges and trends, not single daily positions, and check several sources before drawing conclusions. That is sensible advice for anyone reading a ranking report right now.

5 moves to make this week

1. Do not react to a single drop

If a report from the last few weeks shows a sudden fall, do not change your website yet. Search the phrase yourself in a private browser window from your area, then ask whether calls and form fills actually dropped in the same period. If leads held steady, the chart is probably the problem, not your rankings.

2. Make tracked calls and forms your main number

Every marketing channel should have its own tracked phone number and form source so you know which one produced each lead. A personal injury firm should know how many intake calls came from organic search last month. A roofer should know how many estimate requests came from the Google Business Profile. If you cannot answer that today, start with our guide to tracking law firm marketing performance, which applies to any service business.

3. Check your Google Business Profile insights

For local businesses, calls, direction requests and website clicks from your Business Profile are often a better health check than any rank tracker. They come straight from Google and reflect what real searchers did, not what a bot saw.

4. Ask your agency three questions

A good agency will welcome these. A weak one will change the subject.

  • Which rank tracker do you use, and has it posted any data issues since September?
  • How many calls, forms and booked consultations did organic search produce last month compared with the month before?
  • What did you change on my site or profile this month, and why?

If you are shopping for help, our post on how to choose a law firm marketing agency lists more questions that separate real reporting from a nice looking PDF.

5. Connect leads to revenue in your CRM

The strongest report is one no scraper can break: leads in your CRM, tagged by source, marked as signed or lost. A real estate agent who logs where each listing appointment came from will spot a real problem months before a ranking chart does. The same logic applies to paid search, which is why we wrote about Google Ads getting clicks but no calls: activity is not the same as clients.

What this means for your business

Rankings still matter. You cannot get calls from search if nobody can find you. But rankings are an input, not an outcome, and right now the tools that measure them are having a rough month.

Here is how we suggest ranking your numbers by importance:

MetricWho controls the dataHow much to trust it now
Signed clients and closed jobs by sourceYou, in your CRMHigh
Tracked calls and form leadsYour call tracking and websiteHigh
Business Profile calls and clicksGoogleGood
Search Console clicks and impressionsGoogleGood for trends, may lag
Third-party rank tracker positionsA vendor scraping GoogleUse as a rough trend only

If your marketing reports are mostly the bottom row, this week is a good time to ask for the top rows. That is the core of the Super Simple Marketing Method: measure what pays the bills, then fix whatever leaks between the click and the signed client.

Common questions

Did my website actually lose rankings?

Maybe, maybe not. Google also finished a spam update in early October, so real movement is possible. Compare your tracked leads and Search Console clicks over the same weeks. If those held steady, the drop is likely a data problem.

Should I stop paying for rank tracking?

Not necessarily. Rank tracking is still useful for spotting long trends and checking competitors. Just do not let it be the main number in your reports, and expect vendors to adjust their methods over the coming weeks.

What is the best free way to check my rankings?

Google Search Console shows average position, clicks and impressions for your site at no cost. It blends devices and locations, so treat it as a trend line, then spot check key searches yourself in a private browser window from your service area.
