How to Optimize Your Law Firm’s Website for Search Engines

Abstract architectural composition of light and shadow

Law firm website SEO usually gets approached backwards. A firm picks keywords, sprinkles them into existing pages, and waits. Nothing moves, because the problem was never the keywords.

The problem is almost always structure. Most law firm sites have one services page listing eight practice areas, a homepage trying to rank for everything, and a blog with no relationship to either. There is nothing for Google to rank because there is no page that is clearly about any one thing.

Fix the structure first. Then optimize.

The short answer

Optimizing a law firm website for search means giving each practice area and location its own substantial page, making those pages fast and readable on a phone, supporting them with content that answers real client questions, and connecting your Google Business Profile and local signals to the same service area. Structure first, then on-page details.

Start with structure, not keywords

The rule is one page per practice area, per location you genuinely serve.

A firm handling personal injury, family law, and employment in Los Angeles needs three real pages, not one services page with three paragraphs. If you have a second office, each practice area needs its own page for that location too, with content specific to it rather than the same text with the city swapped.

That last part matters. Duplicated location pages with a find and replace on the city name are the single most common way firms damage their own rankings. If the only difference between two pages is a place name, write one properly or write both properly.

Once the structure exists, keyword research tells you what each page should emphasize. Before it exists, keyword research has nowhere to go.

The on-page checklist

  • One clear topic per page, stated in the title tag and the H1
  • Title tag under about 60 characters with the practice area and city near the front
  • A first paragraph that answers what the page is about in plain language
  • H2 headings that match the questions people actually ask
  • Descriptive alt text on images, written for a person, not stuffed
  • A meta description that earns the click, around 150 characters
  • One obvious next step, repeated where a reader would look for it

Substantial pages outrank thin ones. A practice area page with three paragraphs will not compete with one that genuinely explains the process, the timeline, what a case is worth, and what happens first.

Technical basics that actually matter

Speed and mobile. Most people find you on a phone on cellular data. Test on that, not on office wifi, and fix whatever is loading slowly. Oversized images and page builder bloat are the usual culprits.

Indexation. Make sure your important pages are actually in Google. Search your firm name plus a practice area and see what comes back. Pages nobody links to often are not indexed at all.

Schema. Add LocalBusiness or LegalService markup with your name, address, phone, and hours, and FAQ markup where you have real questions and answers. It will not rank you by itself, but it helps how you appear.

Consistent name, address, and phone number everywhere they appear. Inconsistency here quietly undermines your local visibility more than most firms realize.

Content that earns the ranking

Supporting content exists to make the practice area pages stronger, not to fill a calendar.

For each practice area, write the posts that answer what clients ask in the first ten minutes of a consultation. What is my case worth. How long will this take. What does it cost. What happens if I wait. Each one links back to the practice area page, and the cluster gets stronger together.

This is also the content that surfaces in AI summaries, because it is specific, direct, and answers a question rather than circling it.

The mistake that undoes all of it

A perfectly optimized page with no clear way to get in touch is a page that ranks and earns nothing.

Put a real next step where people finish reading. Make the phone number tappable on mobile. Keep forms short enough that someone will actually complete one on a phone.

Then make sure someone responds quickly, because ranking well only increases the number of leads available to lose. That handoff between the website and the consultation is where most firms leak cases, and it costs nothing to fix compared to everything above.

Common questions

How many pages does a law firm site need?

Enough to cover each practice area you want cases in, each location you serve, and the questions clients ask about them. For most local firms that is fifteen to forty pages, not five and not five hundred.

Should every practice area page target a city?

Only the cities you genuinely serve and can write real content about. Building pages for thirty surrounding towns you have never worked in is a well-known way to get filtered out of local results.

How long before I see movement?

Three to six months for most local markets. Structural fixes sometimes show up faster, because you are giving Google a page to rank where none existed.

Do I need to redesign the whole site?

Usually not. Most firms need pages added and structure fixed, not a new design. A redesign that does not address structure changes how the site looks and nothing about how it ranks.
