Last month we audited fifty Los Angeles County law firm websites, twenty-five personal injury and twenty-five immigration, on one narrow question: when a Spanish-speaking client searches for a lawyer, is there anything there to find?
We expected to find translation widgets. The standard complaint about Spanish-language legal marketing is that firms bolt a browser translator onto an English site and call it bilingual. Across fifty firms we found exactly zero of them doing that. Not one.
What we found instead is a problem that translation quality does not describe and a language toggle does not solve.

Immigration firms are the ones falling behind
Going in, the expectation was the opposite. Immigration law in Los Angeles serves a client base that is overwhelmingly Spanish-dominant, and personal injury is the practice area with the advertising budgets. The data runs the other way.
Three quarters of the injury firms in the sample maintain a genuine Spanish site. Fewer than half the immigration firms do, and forty percent of them publish nothing in Spanish whatsoever, not a landing page, not a translated contact form, not a single blog post.
Personal injury (n = 25)
Immigration (n = 25)
Parallel site = ten or more indexable Spanish URLs, or a complete Spanish tree covering the firm’s practice areas. Partial = one to nine. None = no Spanish content found by sitemap, by direct path, or by site search.
The claim is not the service
Five firms in the sample tell visitors, in English, that they speak Spanish, while publishing no Spanish page for a Spanish speaker to land on. A person searching in Spanish never reaches the sentence that would reassure them, because the sentence is on an English page they will not be shown.
Root Law Group is a full service Spanish & Russian speaking immigration law firm serving clients in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Ventura Counties.
rootlaw.com/about-us, retrieved 26 August 2026. The firm publishes no Spanish page, no Spanish intake form, no Spanish phone line and no translation widget.
None of this means the claims are untrue. A firm can be genuinely bilingual on the phone and monolingual on the web. That is the point: the bilingual capacity these firms have already paid for is invisible to the search that would send them the client.

The full study is also a PDF you can forward to a partner or a web developer. It sets out the claim to delivery gap firm by firm, and the build order for a Spanish section that earns cases instead of just existing.

The Bilingual Gap: 50 LA law firms audited
We audited 25 injury and 25 immigration firms in Los Angeles County on whether they actually serve Spanish-speaking clients online, or only claim to. Method and limits published in full.

Having a Spanish site and serving Spanish clients are different things
Counting Spanish URLs flatters the sample. The more useful measure is what share of a firm’s indexed pages exist in Spanish at all, whether the Spanish side is a real body of content or a few landing pages hanging off a large English site.
Across the thirty-one firms with a parallel Spanish site, the median is forty-five percent. But eight of them sit below twenty percent, and the thinnest sit near zero: a Spanish front door into a building with no Spanish rooms.
Median 45 percent. Eight of thirty under 20 percent. Panish Shea Ravipudi is excluded from this chart, sitemap unreachable.
Three firms translated the wrong direction
The sample contains a pattern nobody goes looking for. Camisassa Law Group, ELR Abogados and the office of Nelson A. Castillo are Spanish-first practices: Spanish sits at the root of the domain and English is the secondary tree. Their Spanish reads as natively written, with correct Latin American immigration register and content that has no English counterpart.
Their English is the machine-translated side.
The usual advice assumes English is the real site and Spanish is the afterthought. For a meaningful slice of the LA legal market that is backwards, and the fix is backwards too.
Two traps that make an audit lie to you
Anyone replicating this will hit both of these, and both produce confidently wrong numbers.
A Spanish page can have an English address. One firm’s only Spanish page lives at /deportation-spanish/. Every path-pattern test for /es/, /espanol/ or Spanish slugs returns zero, and the firm gets scored as having no Spanish presence at all. Only a site search finds it.
A page can return 200 and still not exist. Two firms answer /es/ with a live English blog post, a WordPress catch-all behaving like a soft 404. A crawler that checks status codes marks both as having a Spanish section. Both have none.
All fifty firms
Spanish URL counts are conservative floors. Where a large site’s child sitemaps could not all be enumerated, the total is a verified minimum and the share is computed against what was confirmed.

Method, and what it cannot tell you
Building the sample. Eight search queries per practice area, run in both English and Spanish, covering head terms, accident and deportation intent, and near-me phrasing. Spanish queries surfaced firms the English queries never did, and vice versa, which is itself part of the result. A heavy-advertiser pass was added for personal injury, since the firms that dominate LA billboards do not always dominate the organic results. Directories, referral services, lead-generation sites and listicles were removed by hand. Nonprofit legal-services providers were removed as a definitional choice, which means two of the largest immigration legal providers in the county are not in this sample. Los Angeles County offices only.
Auditing each firm. Sitemap first, for total URL count and Spanish URL count, following every reachable child sitemap. Then direct paths, language switchers and separate Spanish domains. Then a site search per firm, which is what catches the Spanish pages living behind English slugs. For every firm with real Spanish pages, a substantial Spanish page was read for translation quality and judged on verbatim prose against a fixed list of machine tells and human tells. Intake was recorded separately: whether Spanish service is claimed, whether the contact form is in Spanish, whether a separate Spanish line exists, and whether Spanish informational content exists beyond service pages.
What this study does not establish
- Nothing about hreflang or language attributes. The retrieval method rendered pages to text and did not reliably expose head elements, so those signals are unmeasured across all fifty firms. They are not reported as absent. Several sites exposed an Open Graph locale value instead, which is a different tag and is not treated as evidence either way.
- Translation plugins are “not found,” not “not present.” Only WPML surfaced, and only where it prints a visible notice. A plugin that leaves no rendered trace is invisible to this method.
- The local pack was not observed. Organic results only. Near-me and cerca de mi queries stand in for local intent, imperfectly.
- Translation quality is a judgment, not a measurement. Every verdict rests on quoted verbatim prose and a stated list of tells, and every verdict is reversible on evidence.
- No phone was called. Whether a firm answers in Spanish is exactly the question a web audit cannot reach. Several firms scored “none” here may serve Spanish-speaking clients superbly in person.
- URL counts are floors. On the largest sites not every child sitemap could be enumerated.
